Karlie + Jordan | Lapham Peak Engagement

Karlie and Jordan met through her best friend, who also happens to be Jordan’s cousin. I’m always intrigued by how people meet nowadays. The thought of dating seems so daunting with the Internet and all. It has to be a HUGE relief when you find a guy who is already known by someone you trust because they can totally vouch for his character!

Karlie said Jordan keeps her leveled and he’s always calm and sweet. Even when he’s mad he has a smile on his face!

Jordan said Karlie is his best friend. She is the type-A planner who is always two steps ahead of the game. (I can totally relate, being type-A myself!) These two are so relaxed and sweet and they trusted me with whatever I asked. A former bride and groom sent these two my way (hey Jenna and Doug!) and I couldn’t be more grateful to spend their wedding day with them at the new venue, Fete (pronounced FATE), in Wales this November!

Ellie and Justin | Shell Beach, California Styled Couples Session

A couple of posts ago, I talked about my time at the Cultivate workshop in California and how much fun I had together with the other photographers! We had sessions in the redwoods and on the coast, and every single REAL LIFE couple we photographed was up for anything and honestly such a joy to be around. Ellie and Justin were no exception. They’re down-to-earth and sweet and they just got married in Morocco THIS WEEK!!! Jordan Voth, the legend, captured it all and I can’t wait to see more from their epic day! She was seriously STUNNING.

Congratulations to Ellie and Justin for getting married the way they wanted! I couldn’t be happier for them!

These photos were from our time together on the coast last month!

Brittany + Alex | Lion's Den Engagement

How Brittany met Alex:

“It all started with a right swipe and the extremely odd coincidence that his dad was my neighbor.“ (Literally separated by a wall in her apartment complex.)

Ok, what are the chances that the new guy in your life’s DAD is your neighbor? Crazy! Their first date was a playoff Packer game party and the rest was history! Did I tell you how he proposed? Only on a beautiful beach in St. Lucia. LIKE, WHAT. Such a romantic!

Brittany and Alex are sweet and goofy together and they LOVE being outdoors. Camping, fires, you name it! I told her she’s the perfect girl! She can slap on some makeup and a cute dress like the rest of them, but would sleep outside any day of the week. Dream girl. She’s also a talented photographer too! Check out her work here!

We hung out in Lion’s Den a couple weeks ago and ended on the beach just after sunset. The three of us risked our lives to walk across a little log in the water (ok, maybe not our lives but for sure my gear!), to get to that beach. And Alex was the perfect gentlemen helping us get to the other side. We walked back as it got dark out and I enjoyed every second together. They are so easygoing and FUN to be with and I can’t wait for their September wedding at a new local venue, The Carriage House, in Oconomowoc!

Mother's Day

Mother's Day

Mother’s Day.

A day that has mixed reviews. For some, it can be an exciting day to celebrate, while for others, it can bring bitterness or sadness from deep within. Whichever emotion you are feeling today, I hope you know how loved you really are. You might have babies who need your attention constantly. Or how about a toddler who flat out DEMANDS your attention? Or maybe you have both? Regardless, neither can verbalize how much you really mean to them quite yet. Someone needs you deeply, but maybe today you feel underappreciated for all that you do.

I can tell you that in my early years of motherhood, I didn’t love this holiday. I never thought I got “what I deserved” on Mother’s Day. (Sounds awful, right?) I felt underappreciated and I wanted a day OFF from being a mom. I wanted Jon to tend to all my needs and for my kids to be little angels from afar.

But then I felt so much conviction about that. I thought about what my heart’s desire was.

I WANTED OFF FROM A DAY THAT ACKNOWLEDGED EXACTLY WHY I GOT TO CELEBRATE THIS VERY DAY.

I wanted to run and hide from my kids. They were the reason why I celebrated this day and now I didn’t want to be with them?! I’m sure some moms can relate, but I felt so mad at myself for ever feeling this way. (Not my proudest moment.) Maybe it’s because I’m out of those really hard baby/toddler years now, but I look back on my attitude and so wish it would’ve been different.

If you’re feeling just like I did years ago, this post isn’t to shame you. I just wanted to share how my heart changed through the years with the help of the Holy Spirit. I started to take my eyes off myself and make it about others instead. One year, I dropped off a little something for my sister, visited with my step-dad and his sweet wife, and of course saw my mom and Jon’s mom too. Those little actions really helped me take my eyes off ME and made it it about the women who mattered most in my life.

I think I can say for certain that all moms want to feel these three things:

LOVED

APPRECIATED

CARED FOR

And they want to hear “you’re doing a good job” once in a while. Because being a mom is seriously the hardest job on the planet! There are days when we want to pull out our hair because our kids aren’t listening to us. Or when we walk away from the child throwing a fit because we know we might lose it on them if we try any harder. Maybe you’re in the teenage years? I know I’m experiencing some lip or attitude from a certain 12yr old and it scares the crap out of me.

What runs through my head? DON’T SCREW THEM UP.

Parenting is HARD. Incredibly rewarding, but still hard. But there is hope, you guys!! We have a Savior who walks with us through it all and CARES about our every need! And when we feel like we can’t go on? He wants us to cast our cares on Him! Cry out to Him today if you’re sad or feeling alone. And I want to pray for you too! Please comment below (anonymously, if you choose) telling me how I can pray for you today and every day this week.

Happy Mother’s Day to every single mom out there who is just trying to do her best. We see you and you are LOVED. And for the women who are coping with loss or struggling with infertility, I’m praying for you too today.

xoxo

Just a little shoutout to one of my favorite moms and dear friend, Marie. She took these treasured photos for me and I can’t thank her enough. Love you, Marie Joy!

Redwoods Couples Session | Northern California

We did three total sessions in the Redwoods for Cultivate Workshop (the styled elopement was TOO GOOD) and here are the other two lovely couples we were so fortunate to work with that evening!

Laura and Shane are engaged to be married and SO IN LOVE. I loved how playful they were in front of the camera and how friendly they were with us too! They were up for ANYTHING and Laura’s smile is seriously infectious!!!

Lastly, we have Jon + Tayren. What I really loved about these two was their kindness and tenderness for one another. They are fostering the sweetest baby boy and decided to bring him to the shoot because they said their time together might be limited and they want him to experience everything they do. Their hearts!!! Jon was so friendly and really engaged with all of us, asking inquiring questions to get to know their photographers. I loved watching this sweet married couple together. Also, totally down for whatever we asked. The dream team.

A Styled Redwoods Elopement | Northern California

My last post talked all about my experience at Autocamp at the Cultivate workshop! We did some styled shoots over the three days we were there and I was so excited to blog them all! These people are REAL LIFE couples who are as madly in love as these photos portray. They’re real people with a real story and I loved meeting all of them.

On the first night, we snuck into the redwoods to snap a few photos of this beautiful married couple and I couldn’t get enough! That dress, those florals, and her hair. I mean, seriously. I only DREAM of thick, gorgeous hair like hers!!

Cultivate Autocamp | Russian River, CA

Every year, photographers invest in their businesses with continuing education. There are several ways to learn and grow, and workshops are just one of the ways we can do that. I attended two in 2014, one in early 2015, and then I did nothing for FOUR WHOLE YEARS! Because workshops are so prevalent in the industry, it can seem overwhelming when deciding where to go and who to learn from!

After meeting Emily Magers in 2015 at the Heck Yeah workshop, I fell in love with her work and admired the fact that she was so open about her faith and love for Jesus! Not too long after Heck Yeah, she released her own workshop, Cultivate, with Dawn Charles. I knew I wanted in from the moment they launched! Dates, times, and finances never lined up - until this year. In February, I applied for Cultivate and I got a response back - SOLD OUT. I was bummed, but I get it! Who wouldn’t want to learn from these two lovely ladies?!

And then one day, an Instagram story changed everything.

Emily posted in early March that a spot had opened up for their April workshop at Autocamp in Russian River, California. I replied within minutes and said, “Take me!”. Not desperate at all, right? Well, the rest was history. Within 24 hours, I had my plane ticket and rental car and I was ready to rock-n-roll.

I knew I needed to take the time to invest in my business and I was excited to learn from everyone at Cultivate. But this workshop was so much more than just learning about branding, posing, and photographing beautifully styled shoots. Although all of it was amazing and insightful, I was really overwhelmed with the atmosphere of women who were genuine, humble, and loved Jesus. I think sometimes we go to these types of gatherings not knowing what to expect or who we will encounter. So I prayed over this workshop from the moment I found out I was going and the Lord had His hand in the entire thing - start to finish. It was beautiful, vulnerable, and humbling in so many ways.

I learned some things I have implemented since returning home and I’m already excited to see where my business will go! I know that I’m confident I’m on the right path and I’m doing the best to give my clients ALL OF ME.

Photographers, if you’re looking for a workshop with genuine, humble women who are open books, go to Cultivate. Emily and Dawn pour their hearts and souls into teaching and it’s evident in all they do!

Here are a few photos of the Autocamp grounds (some are iPhone photos!) and some of the girls who attended, plus a few of me at the end taken by my friend, Ray! And how about those gorgeous styled shoots?! Look for them in the next blog post - coming soon!!!

Resurrecting the Blog

Resurrecting the Blog

I stepped away from blogging the last couple years because it was the most overwhelming feeling to me and I just never really knew where to start. I also questioned if people even read these anymore?! What I DO know is that it’s a great way to share my work and have my voice be heard in a spot other than a social media platform.

So here I am, resurrecting my blog on Good Friday. (Kind of fitting for this weekend, right?)

A little bit about me: I’m a born again believer who loves the Lord and is just trying to do my best every day to seek Him and grow in Him. I don’t have it all figured out, there is no perfect method to serving Him. It’s a daily dying-to-self process where He is first and everything else comes after. I fail plenty by letting life get in the way of my time with the Him, but I’m thankful His mercies are new each day!

My husband and I met in youth group back in 2001 and the rest is history. We married in 2005 (I was 20, he was 22), and we had two beautiful daughters not long after. Our oldest will be 12 in a few weeks and our youngest is 7. PARENTING IS HARD. Like, really hard. Our kids are sweet, kind, respectful, and they love Jesus. We are SO thankful and blessed!! But there’s still time to screw them up, and letting go as they get older scares the crap out of me.

I love being with people!! I feed off of others’ energy and get LIFE from them. But if you spent one day in my head, I think you might question your friendship with me. I overthink everything and my OCD tendencies are sometimes crippling. But hey, you can always count on me for a few pumps of natural sanitizing spray!

To those who have followed my journey since day one (July 21, 2012), thank you for your undying support. And for my newest followers, I hope you enjoy getting to know me and my clients! My goal here is to share my heart with you about life, this sweet business of mine, and of course my client’s love stories too!
